Submitted!

October 22, 2005 on 9:30 am | In Linux, hyper-get |

I’ve submitted the project to Sourceforge! Now all I have to do is sit tight and wait for their reply….which definitely won’t be arriving before Monday.

Please view the rest of this post if you are interested in what I submitted.

1. Submitter: j_k9

2. Project UNIX Name: hyper-get

3. Project Descriptive Name: HyperGet

4. License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

License other:

5. Project Description: An application to download libraries and other applications for an offline Debian-based Linux computer. Consists of two applications - one package status verifier, and one downloader. The downloader can be compiled on both Linux and Windows.

6. Registration Description: This app’s purpose is to help those people whose Linux (Debian-based) computers are not connected to the internet. Basically, there are two apps which go hand-in-hand (both applications are for the GUI, so that the simplicity and ease-of-use will attract both new and experienced Linux users alike):

1. One application which - on the click of a button - reads and stores the content of /var/lib/dpkg/status in a language like XML;
2. The downloader tool, to be used on a box which has internet access (this app would have to be available for both Linux and Windows).

The first app is the one you should use primarily. As I said, it should be simple to compile (possibly put in a Python script to do it for the end user), and then all it does is store the /var/lib/dpkg/status file in a ‘readable’ format. There will then be another button which will copy this information to your chosen removable drive - whether it be a floppy disk, flash drive, external hard drive, or another removable device.

The second app should be installed on the machine which has internet access (can be either a Linux or Windows computer), and once the installation is done, you plug in your device. You start up the second app, point it to the file on the device, and then you type in the program/library you want to download in a text box. On the click of a button, it will find out what versions of what libraries and programs you have (from the file), and then will go onto the repositories (which should be easily configurable through the application) to download the program/library you specified. Should that program have any dependencies, it will also download them (bearing in mind that it would exclude any dependencies which you already have, as long as it is greater than or equal to the version required). All these files would be downloaded to a specified folder, and once it’s done you can copy that folder to your data device, plug that device back into your offline Linux box, and then use an integrated button in the first application to install those downloaded files (in the necessary order).

This application would probably be coded in C, although some parts may use other languages (for example, the installation script - which could be coded in Python). The first application would use the GTK libraries, as would the Linux version of the second application (yet the Windows version would have to use the Windows APIs). The idea is to attract as many users to this application as possible, because there are many complaints about not being able to download software because of dependancies, and so these applications would aim to eliminate this issue. It would be - in some ways - similar to Giacommo Catenazzi’s application ‘apt-zip’ (found here), but with much more functionality and with an enticing graphical front-end. It would also add support for the new users who haven’t yet migrated from Windows (or are dual-booting/giving Linux a try).

Your request should be reviewed by SourceForge.net staff in the next two business days (9AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday). Response regarding your project (notice of rejection/approval) will be posted to your My SourceForge.net Projects page (accessible via the My SF.net link at the top of each site page). No email notification will be provided about approval/rejection of your project.

Should you have questions or concerns regarding the status of your project registration, please submit a Support Request.

Thank you,

SourceForge.net staff

What do you think? I’m going to create a mockup of the app’s graphics soon, so please stay tuned!
