Cedega 5.0 Is Out!

November 8, 2005 on 8:03 pm | In Linux | 5 Comments

Cedega allows you to play Windows games on Linux, and this latest release promises to be the best yet! It supports more games, the graphics and frames per second rate are even better, support for Pixel Shaders 1.4 and other upgrades are pushing me to buy this latest version. The only reason I still have a Windows partition is because I use it to play games - but if Cedega 5.0 is as good as everyone claims it is, then I can kiss that horrible OS goodbye!

Here’s more on the gaming portability app:

TransGaming Technologies, the global leader in the development of software portability products for cross-platform gaming, today announced the immediate availability of Cedega™ 5.0, the industry’s most comprehensive Linux gaming portability product. Cedega 5.0’s broad range of new and improved features boosts game graphics and delivers greater levels of usability, specifically meeting the demands of the established gaming market, and opening doors to bring more gamers to the Linux platform.

Cedega allows games originally created for the Windows platform to run on Linux, straight out-of-the-box. Popular titles supported on Cedega 5.0 include Battlefield 2™, Dungeon Siege® II, City of Villains™, Madden NFL™ 2006, World of WarCraft®, Half-Life® 2, Guild Wars®, and many others. Cedega is available through TransGaming’s online subscription service, resellers and OEM partners.

Why do people switch to Linux?

November 3, 2005 on 8:24 pm | In Linux | 3 Comments

Because they realise how unstable and insecure Windows is? No, that’s not why - but as I quote from an article on oreillynet.com, there are a wide variety of reasons - and most people do not switch because of Windows gripes. Take a look:

  • I like Linux because it’s unix, it’s cheap and for a scientist it’s a pleasure to use on the desktop.
  • I was at work one day and one of the sys admins said, dial out to my box at home. I did and was greeted by something that smelled a lot like System V “What is it?”, I asked, expecting that he had gotten hold of “free” copy of UnixWare or something (which was probably about $1500-2000 at the time). He said, “It’s Linux.”
  • I chose Linux simply because I thought the mascot looked cute enough.

20 Years of Windows…

November 1, 2005 on 5:42 pm | In Linux, LQ.org | 2 Comments

…and it still isn’t that great. I hate the fact that my school ‘requires’ that we use Windows XP - in fact, we don’t need to use it, because Linux works perfectly well on the Windows Domain. But ‘Oh no, you must use Windows’, say the almighty technicians. Why?

Is it proven to be more secure than Linux? No. Is it proven to be more stable than Linux? No. Is it proven to be more user-friendly than Linux? No. I rest my case.

I think Jeremy (LQ.org’s admin) has a brilliant explanation of this in his blog.
