20 Years of Windows…
November 1, 2005 on 5:42 pm | In Linux, LQ.org |…and it still isn’t that great. I hate the fact that my school ‘requires’ that we use Windows XP - in fact, we don’t need to use it, because Linux works perfectly well on the Windows Domain. But ‘Oh no, you must use Windows’, say the almighty technicians. Why?
Is it proven to be more secure than Linux? No. Is it proven to be more stable than Linux? No. Is it proven to be more user-friendly than Linux? No. I rest my case.
I think Jeremy (LQ.org’s admin) has a brilliant explanation of this in his blog.
The reason I say that it is not more user-friendly than Linux is because a user new to computers could navigate a distro like Mandriva just as well as Windows. In fact, my mum finds Mandriva even easier to use than Windows - and if my mother can use Linux, anybody can.

Well the main reason i find that windows is used is shown in its commercials
the number of apps there are for windows blows linux out of the water
Many educational facilites have MS contracts too, and so far there is no linux support group going around organized offering linux support and cd’s(if anyone wants to help me do this email me signifer123([{atsimboul}])msn([{dotsimboul}])com) that help ease the integration to linux like windows does.

I take (small) issue with the previous comments:
Linux has thousands of apps - Debian has around 8000 on the repositories and Gentoo, I believe, has 14000. No small number.
The reason that Windows is so popular is because:
it’s used at work
it came installed with the pc
(I) only know Windows and don’t want to try anything else
As Linux use increases, Windows will lose ground more and more.
