Become Your Own Webhost In 75 Steps

January 16, 2006 on 8:22 pm | In Hyperactive |

I thought that this article was worthy of a mention, as it explains how to install a FreeBSD webserver (Apache) complete with MySQL, PHP5 and Perl support. While not strictly Linux, I think it’s a great way for anyone willing to host their own website for the reason that some webhosts simply do not stick to their words. Having your server right in front of you also helps if you want to install new applications or change files with the least amount of hassle.

As the fluctuating connectivity in the broadband networks here cannot be trusted, I opted for a commercial hosting solution: BlueHost. BlueHost provide an extremely simple cPanel with which you can control many of your website’s more complex features, they have a superb support team who work diligently to keep everything running smoothly, and I can’t say I’m disappointed with their $6,95 per month deal. If you want to set up your own webserver - go for it! It will be an excellent experience and an opportunity to broaden your Open Source horizons. However, BlueHost just works for me. ;)

  4. Haha - I ‘need’ Windows XP to work on this network - although I’m dang sure that with a bit of work I can get Linux to use the same certificates, but I’m not too sure how to do that….so, in the meantime, I have to use this thing

    ;)

  8. I have an XP machine here at work since the whole company decides to have everyone use exchange for email, which totally blows.

  9. At least we’re using FF. Right now I’m on Windows 98 which I consider a much better OS than XP. My main machine with Linux has been down for quite a while now (how frustrating!) and I’m using my father’s machine which has 98. I’m hoping to dual boot it with FreeBSD…

  10. Drew: Doesn’t Thunderbird work on Exchange servers? I know Evolution does…. (In fact, I managed to connect to the Exchange server here using Evolution plugin on an FC3 box last year :)). Although if the company also makes you use XP, then you really don’t have a way to get out of it….

Hari: Yup! This site doesn’t even show properly on IE…
One of my Linux laptops is also down - a battery charger (or battery) failure, although I’m having it checked up on as we speak. ;)

  11. My blog shows very badly in IE as well. It will be on my agenda once I get my machine up and working to work on the HTML to display correctly in IE.

IE’s CSS handling leaves a lot to be desired.

  12. Most designers have given up trying to code their sites so that they look the same in IE as in standards-compliant browsers - and I really don’t blame them! It’s a battle which we are not going to win - so why fight? ;)
