Why I Can’t Get Rid Of Windows
January 29, 2006 on 6:30 pm | In Linux |As much I would like to format my Windows laptop and put Linux on it, there are a few reasons I cannot do this. First of all, there are the games. I am a regular CS:Source player, and to install it on Linux I had to try to get it working by using Wine and the help of this article. Now, sure - I have CS:Source running on Kanotix at home, and it runs substantially faster than on an equal Windows system; but, would I have to do this with all my games?
This problem should soon be solved, as Linux really is coming to the desktop - the number of people I know who have migrated to Linux (some with my help, others without) is amazing! Therefore, the games manufacturers should come to the conclusion that they should start producing completely cross-platform games (with the aid of a universal library) so that they will be supported on most if not all Operating Systems.
Another software issue which doesn’t really relate to me but more to commercial users is the lack of professional applications to process accounts, CAD and the like. Like my previous point, this is not the fault of the Linux community, but the manufacturers. They automatically aim for the majority which is where they will be earning the most money (like any business would?).
Windows got them, the Mac got them - hopefully we will have them soon as well. That way, Linux will not only be a desktop OS, but an all-out everything OS. Until that day comes, I will be forced to use Windows for gaming (and to work on the corporate network here which refuses to support non-Windows systems, but I’m hoping to work my way around that eventually).

I agree. The rate at which manufacturers are porting programs to *nix is pitiful. Unfortunately, apart from lame internet petitions (’cos they work so well) our only recourse are blog entries like this and to email the companies. They won’t do it because they don’t believe they can make money from it.

Definitely - and the petitions really _do not work_. Hopefully enough people will start using Linux to cause the companies to change their minds . . .

Speak “with extreme prejudice”
I am becoming heartily sick of people saying “please sign my online petition”. What do they think will happen? Do they think the CEO of the company will call up his team and say “hey, some random stranger on the internet has gathered a bunch of other random strangers together virtually and is begging us to release a Linux version. Now I know you people said there’s no money in it and it could bankrupt us, but let’s do it and LET’s DO IT FOR FREE!”
Yeah, ‘cos that’ll happen.

Precisely. Those companies may have a motive for releasing a Linux version in the future, but until then we’re not going to have much luck. Wine, Cedega, Crossover Office, Win4Lin, and all the others are gonna remain in fashion for quite a while. At least we have those!
This ‘no update because no access to wp-admin’ thing is getting irritating… I wish I’d set up that ‘email to an email address and the email will be posted’ feature - that’d come in handy now!

I’m going to try and get it unblocked today. It’s been blocked because of the comment moderation queue - I went to it to delete some spam and, well, you can guess the rest
