Valentine’s Makeover
February 14, 2006 on 3:48 pm | In Sites |As you will all know (it’s quite hard not to with all the propaganda), it is Valentine’s Day. The day you go out and spoil your partner rotten with presents, kisses, roses and all sorts. But this isn’t a love blog, so I’ll wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day and then we can continue.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Good, now we can move on. As I have nothing better to do today, I will be giving this blog a complete makeover - yup, I’m going to slave away at the keyboard (and mouse) until I can get this to look as unique as… as Jordan’s breasts. That’s the phrase I was looking for.
Q. So, what will be changing?
A. I have quite a passion for design, so I’m going to try and make this look pretty without taking it over the top - I have to find the balance between eyesight infatuation, usability and readability. There’s no point making a blog look good if the content becomes unreadable (well, most of the time). I will also be upgrading to WordPress 2.0, and will be basing my new style on the brilliant - and unfinished - K2.
In terms of the content, very much of the same will be posted. I was thinking of changing this into a tech blog, so that my posts were not entirely focused around Linux, but I have now decided against it because - well, quite frankly, Linux kicks ass. So the same sort of How To’s, articles, rants, reviews, and random stuff will be coming up.
Q. What else will change?
A. Some of you may know (from my posts requesting help with PHP on about three different forums) that I am indeed learning PHP, so I’ll be adding some features as I go learning. First of all, I’d like to write a content verifier for the contact form, as recently I have been getting a few spam emails coming through it. Then I’ll be adding a download manager, and once I’m experienced enough I think I’ll write a Pepper for the one and only Mint.
Apart from that, I’m not changing, and neither is my content for the moment… (At least try to pretend I didn’t just waste a few minutes of your life?)

Good luck with the makeover. There are plugins you can get via the Wordpress codex if you get stuck on the coding.

Thanks Ray - it’s already in progress, although I have to say I’m slightly worried about the Wordpress upgrade! Apart from that, I’m fine with the theming
Oh, and I installed Slack today! It’s going just as well as I thought it would lol…

The Wordpress upgrade is a breeze. It takes a lot less time and hassle than you’d think.
No idea what’s going on with your Slack install, I’ve never had an X or a network card problem under Slack. Maybe your virtual desktop is confusing the install?

It’s not virtual… I installed Slack on the best box I’ve got!
I looked at the Wordpress upgrade docs, but before I proceed I want to make sure I have at least 3 backups - better safe than sorry…

If you are using the X on the cd, maybe it would be best to remove it and grab it via Swaret or as packages from the Slack site?
As for your NIC, *shrugs*, all mine have used the eepro files and have worked fine.

Hm - I chose the same one as the installation Cd’s, so it should work (which is why I’m confused). I would get a new one via Swaret, but my NIC’s down. Packages from the Slack site - which one should I get? The X11 base packages, or do I go for something else? Thanks.

I’m not going to be much help with X I’m afraid, I usually install x11, x11-devel, x11-fonts-100dpi, x11-fonts-misc, and leave it at that. I once cheated entirely by not installing it at all and then requesting a package via swaret that required X and swaret did it all for me
With your NIC, what does netconfig do?

Haha - that is cheating! Hey, if the easy way works then there’s no point not using it…
I tried netconfig, but although I put in all the correct values and stuff it still doesn’t work. .. Here’s what nbisis said on LQ:
The thing it that I’ve tried modprobing nvnet, but it cannot be located (ie. my computer doesn’t have it). Funnily enough, I installed Slack 10.2 on a 4-year-old laptop and it’s running KDE brilliantly! The irony…
About the makeover - I have encountered a bug in the theme, so I will have to work on it until I can get it just right. Then it’ll be coming to town! Heh…

What’s the lspci output for your card? Can we be sure that it’s being picked up? It’s possible that it’s “too new” for the build (Pat is always a little conservative) - maybe if you either:
a) tried an older card
or
b) tried a newer kernel
it would be picked up.
Just chucking out ideas here

lspci returns:
00:04.0 Ethernet controller: nVidia Corporation nForce2 Ethernet Controller (rev a1)So, I’m guessing it is being recognised…
I tried going to /usr/src/linux-2.4.31/drivers/net and running a ‘gcc -o forcedeth forcedeth.c’ but I ended up with what appears to be 2008 errors coming up, and a compilation failure. Hehe… This really is a tough one!

Hehe! Actually, it’s only comments with 2 links that get caught…
Thanks for the link! Sadly, I won’t have access to the Slack box for about another month (23rd of next month), so I’ll have to wait to try it out… But in the meantime I can enjoy my fully-working Slack laptop! Hehe! Any idea how to start X automagically upon boot though? That’s something I don’t know how to do yet
