Server OS - Battle Of The Titans
March 2, 2006 on 9:30 pm | In Linux, Server |For the first time in the past decade (and possibly more), there have been more Microsoft servers sold in one year than UNIX(-based). This may seem very surprising, as UNIX and *nix-based servers have been proven in several articles to be faster and usually more cost-effective, but there is no fooling the results.
Microsoft’s close lead may soon come to an end, because when Vista comes out the current Microsoft-running servers will be ‘asked’ to switch to the newer OS. In an article discussing whether Microsoft can keep their lead or not, here is what the author had to say of the servers which already have another OS installed:
…businesses already own them, businesses know they work, and the server operating systems—and the hardware they run on—are already paid for. In other words, never, ever underestimate the power of the installed base. And that’s never truer than when upfront costs come to the fore.
However, the fact that Windows came out top as the server OS last year does not disturb the figures relating to growth rates. It is fairly clear from these that Linux is becoming more and more popular among the public:
Linux, with its year-to-year growth of 20.8 percent, leaves Windows’ 4.7 percent year-over-year growth in the dust.
I suggest you read the article, as it sums up quite well the reasons why Linux will most probably outcompete Vista/Longhorn when it comes out - at least in the server sector. A recent survey also proved that Linux is a better server OS all-round than Windows, and you can read the results in the PDF here. If one set of statistics is not enough to persuade you, then maybe this survey (also a PDF) will help tip the scales.
