Does Fedora use Gnome by default? Didn't know that one! Anyway, this release should be interesting for all Fedora fans.

Yeah, it dates back to, I think, RedHat 8 and the whole Bluecurve thingamibob. The plan was to make Gnome and KDE use the same theme and to look the same (cosmetically speaking) so it would matter less which desktop you used. I, like most people, disliked Bluecurve and immediately started tweaking the look so it was a wee bit more unique.

And then I stopped using Gnome forever and di the same to KDE :)

On the subject of Gnome:

Paradoxically, while I like KDE I don't like to use QT libs in my programming. But I don't like Gnome, but I prefer to use GTK libs. :)

Maybe the licensing history of QT has something to do with it.

Ray's right - it was all that Bluecurve stuff that got it going, but GNOME is the default. Bluecurve never worked the trick for me either - it was too 'standard' for my liking ;)

Hari, that's a bit of a mix you've got there.. lol! So which desktop environment do you program for in the end? :D

I'm going to try out Gentoo 2006.0 tomorrow, because apparently it can be installed in about 2 hours if you only use Stage 3 - that sounds a bit more reasonable than two days! I'll let you know how it goes..

That's the problem! :) Currently trying to learn other Toolkits, like ncurses and also wxWidgets.

But nothing quite as good as GTK. GTK is very good for programming and glade and libglade makes it so easy to separate the interface design from the coding.

Lol! Yeah, it's probably a bit annoying having to change toolkit between desktop environment, etc.. I used GTK at one point with Glade (when I was trying to see how far my minimal C skills extended in the graphical Linux programming world), and it was quite fun. I followed a tutorial on the internet, and I soon had a basic calculator application working. That was fun, but I gave up C ion pursuit of PHP - I'll definitely be returning to it though :D

<a href="http://directory.fsf.org/zenity.html" rel="nofollow">Zenity</a> is an app I've been wanting to check out for a while now - it gives a command line application the ability to create Gtk dialoig boxes. Quite nigty ;)

Currently installing Gentoo - I'm surprised that the installation is going so well! The network card was automatically detected, the documentation is stunningly extensive, and I'm extracting the portage tarball as we speak. I'll write my thoughts on it when it's finished.. For now, it looks amazing :D

I thought you were a Slacker for life? :P

I haven't had a look at the graphical installer - but I did encounter a few problems with Gentoo. I'm going to reinstall it again tonight, because I now know how it goes and what to do. The only mistake I made was using genkernel to compile my kernel for me - that ended up causing more problems than it was worth IMO.. The only problem was that when I tried compiling my own, I didn't know what to copy it as.. ie:

<code># cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/[kernel-version]</code>

That left me wondering what to replace with - and I knew that uname -r wouldn't work because that would display the Live CD's kernel.

It was alright in the end though. I ended up with a disfunctional network card (I posted the error on LQ in the Linux - Distributions forum) and the startx command didn't work. Maybe I should've tried executing '/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon' (if that would work).

I had to install Kubuntu over it to finish a tutorial, which is a shame. But I'm going to reinstall Gentoo tonight if I get the chance - and if I manage to work out the answers to those questions by reading some other Gentoo tutorials! The handbook isn't too clear on the <a href="http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7#doc_chap3" rel="nofollow">kernel image copying</a> bit ;)

I am a Slacker for life, I've returned to the fold. I also used the genkernel and it gave me no problem. The problems occurred during "emerge --update --deep world" and that was down to the fact that my network cable turned out to be bad. Of course, I only realised this after I had reinstalled Slackware :)

I found the whole Gentoo install to be very easy (when I went back to the "old" method from a 2005.0 disk I have lying around). It's true what they say "follow the guide and you shouldn't have any problems".

<blockquote>

“emerge –update –deep world”

</blockquote>

Was there something I missed? :P

I'll give Slackware another go today - let's see how far I get on a laptop with an ATi card. This should be, er, an 'entertaining' experience :D
