Four Hours And Two Bucketloads Of Perspiration Later

… I have set up a Counter-Strike:Source server for a client. The Band of Brothers clan contacted me a few days ago, and we agreed to a deal - I would set up and configure their server as they wanted for a flat rate (the first time), and then I would be hired on occasion to maintain and update the server at an hourly rate. Being a student, and knowing my way around the Source Dedicated Server (see my HOW TO: Setup a CS:Source Dedicated Server tutorial if you would like to set up your own), I eagerly accepted the offer.

My job was fairly simple, yet slightly tedious (but fun), and it ended up taking longer than I had anticipated (I had guessed that it would take 2 hours… It took twice that). However, it’s now working like a charm, and I just thought I’d boast a bit about this - hey, it’s not every day that I get paid to do something I enjoy

The Band of Brothers admins are great guys - they’re kind and trustworthy. But, dare I say, demanding (Sid - hehe! :D)! Here’s a list of some of the things I had to do:

• Set up several Steam IDs as admins, with two groups - one for global administration, and another for restricted administration. There were to be six restricted administrators and two global ones;
• Disable awp and auto snipers;
• Set up the following plugins: Mani-Admin-Plugin, zBlock, Mattie’s Event Scripts, including his KnifeSyphon and MugMod plugins, and HLStatsX. I managed to set all of these up except for HLStatsX - the reason I couldn’t install this one is because I could not access their server via SSH, so I could not install the necessary Perl modules, web server (Apache) and database (MySQL) to get it running. Instead, I had to opt for Mani’s inbuilt statistics app, which isn’t quite as good.
• Set up a map rotation, and I was also given the freedom to select a custom map of my own! I selected the much-loved de_dolls
• Configure a custom start screen (motd). This part was not too hard, but I have yet to add the {B-B} graphic to it, and also to the spawn points. I was also meant to set it so that a song was played as soon as a player joins the server. However, I have been given permission to leave the latter two tasks for tomorrow
• And a bunch of other small stuff…

What do I think of the (almost) completed server? Well, Band of Brothers seem to be pleased, so that’s good enough for me! As long as I’ve brought a smile to someone’s face, I’m happy

So, there you go. Just thought I’d brag about something (for once) - haha!
