The Upgrade From Hell

August 31, 2006 on 2:57 pm | In Hyperactive |

When I had K2 looking just how I wanted it, I backup up the SQL database, backed up the Wordpress files, disabled all my plugins and hit the “Upgrade to Wordpress 2.0.3″ button on my webserver’s Fantastico page. Fantastico is an auto-installer, and the great guys at BlueHost try to keep it as up to date as possible, so that we’re installing or upgrading to the latest software. Wordpress 2.0.4 came out a month ago, but they haven’t got to that yet - not a problem, I’ll just upgrade to it when it is added to Fantastico.

Then I visited my site - oh no, the old K2 theme (for the 1.5.x versions of Wordpress) is still active, and debug messages are being shown at the top of every post. Rats. Not a problem - I’ll delete K2, and replace it with the newer version, which I have customized (check the “just how I wanted it” link above). I went to my server’s administration pages and opened up the File Manager (BlueHost don’t allow SSH access to the (virtual) server unless you send them a photo of yourself by fax, which is quite silly in my opinion), and tried to delete the K2 folder. That didn’t work.. Oh, it’s in use - fair enough. As I had been working on the other, newer version of K2 on another installation of Wordpress on my website (appropriately called “testblog“), I just copied the folder to the root directory, renamed it to “k2s”, and then put it in the same folder as the old K2.

I then came to this blog’s admin page and switched the theme to the new K2. I then went back to File Manager, deleted the old K2, and renamed the new one to “k2″. Oops, bad idea. I went to this blog’s homepage and was greeted by a white page with a single MySQL error. Oh CRAP.

I couldn’t change the theme back, as the admin panel wasn’t working (and I had deleted the theme anyway). So, I reopened the File Manager window and renamed “k2″ to “k2s”. I then went to the Wordpress theme site, downloaded the first one I saw (Almost Spring), uploaded it here, and went to this blog’s admin page. It was working… Excellent. The K2 theme I had copied was broken. There goes all my hard work. *sigh*

I activated the Almost Spring theme, and that is the beautiful thing you’re looking at now ;) Hehe.

I then deleted the K2 theme, and uploaded a freshly downloaded (and untouched) version of it. I unpacked it, and switched to it from the blog’s admin page. I’m still getting the old header image… Err,, what? How is that possible?

It looks like the first one was not deleted properly. So, off I go to contact BlueHost’s support team to ask them to erase it. Then, I’ll upload K2, and customize it all over again

I can’t help but laugh at this. Join in the fun :P

  1. That’s why I never use Fantastico. But this theme looks great as well.

  2. Aye - I don’t think I’ll be using Fantastico for the next upgrade ;)

This theme isn’t too bad, but it’s not my style. It’s too shocking and “in your face” - it may be called “Almost Spring”, but there’s nothing suave about it :P

  3. Yeah, somehow this blog is just not “you” now. It’s a very non-techy theme — good on its own merits — but just a bit odd for J_K9 @ Linux.

Hope you can recreate that Tux theme you were designing.

  4. I hope I can get the other theme up too - I’ve emailed BlueHost, because I’ve got a feeling that the old K2 folder wasn’t deleted properly…

I’ve changed theme, in the meantime. I actually like this one quite a lot :) I may change the colours to grey, though - but it is quite nice.

  5. Yuck, I hate the automagically upgrade utilities most of the time.

  6. Haven’t you got FTP access, J_K9? If so I’m sure it’s easy to delete folders without a problem. You can even use Konqueror as a simple FTP browser.

  7. Drew - I had never used Fantastico to upgrade. I guess I’ve learnt the hard way :P

Hari - Nope. Well, I do, but it’s using their Java FTP client, which is a bit odd… I’ll try deleting it from there though, for what it’s worth. :)

And what do you think of this theme? If I changed the colours, I don’t think it’d look too bad.

  8. I quite like the new theme - you still need to personalise it though. I quite liked the old look and the look of the testblog looks pretty cool.

Better get it fixed before school starts :)

  9. Not to rain on the parade… but 2.0.4 has been out for a while and includes some security fixes you may want.

  11. Ray - Aye! It shouldn’t take me long to customise this, though - but I’ll only do that if I can’t get K2 working.

Handy - Thanks for the links. I’ll update it (manually, heh) right away :)

Alison - Yes, I’m afraid I will… I liked the old theme too, but changes are good, and I’d had that one for quite a few months. Actually, the real reason I’ve changed theme is because the Wordpress update broke the old one (and I decided to go for a different design when I discovered that) :P Hehe.

  12. Upgraded. A little painfully, but upgraded nonetheless.

    Next time, I think I’ll copy the linux/ directory to linux2/, update linux2/, delete linux/ and rename linux2/ linux/ ;)

  13. Grats on the upgrade!

Oh, the trick with your “next time” plan is remember you have those URI values pointing at /linux in your admin Options -> General page…. your approach will work up until you want to run the upgrade.php script. Then it goes all pear-shaped. :-\

  14. Thanks, Handy ;)

The “plan” isn’t to get no downtime at all… But to minimise it. And was I meant to run that script (upgrade.php)? I did everything manually, as the wiki describes..

So, if I upgraded the linux2/ one manually, then deleted linux/ and renamed linux2/ linux/, it should work just fine :)

I don’t think I’m going to be able to get K2 working, so I’m sticking with this theme. I’ll customise it tomorrow!

  15. Ok, in that event “der plan” makes more sense. :-)

And no, for 2.0.3 to .4 there was no need to run upgrade.php (as far as I noticed).

I’m amused at the various computers/browsers we’ve used during this exchange. Is that a plugin that adds ‘em to the comments? I gotta get me some of that.

  16. Hehe :)

The plugin is a nice one I found a while back - it’s called Browsniff. Check it out here: click

It works just fine on Wordpress 2.0.x, by the way ;)
