Linux - Always Your Home
September 8, 2006 on 5:08 pm | In Linux |As I lay down on my bed last night (in school), I began brainstorming. I’m not running out of ideas for this blog - not at all. I have an excellent line-up of tutorials on their way (and I shall write them when I get more time). However, I had to think of something concise and coherent… And, when I remembered the link on LinuxToday to another blogger’s article about how unhelpful the Linux community is, the idea for the post came to me immediately.
I joined LinuxQuestions.org when I was still on the teat, and very much a Linux newbie. Back then, I didn’t realise just how welcoming the Linux community was - a lot of people did welcome me when I joined the forums, but they do that on any other forums too.
However, it has taken me this long to realise that, not only were they welcoming me to the forums, but into the Linux community as well. I never fail to be amazed at how many people ask questions on LQ; almost all of those questions are answered, and quickly. I have made many good friends on LQ and on other Linux forums, and, if I have ever needed help, they have always been there to provide it.
Now that I am a more senior member at LQ, I reciprocate. If I answer a newbie’s post, whether they’re new to Linux or not, I will always welcome them to the forum. If they need more help, specifics, I post them. Sometimes I even email them, and I help them out via IM. And I know that I’m not the only person that does this - thousands of other do. In fact, it was someone who did just what I described above who introduced me to Linux, and helped me install Fedora Core 2, first on a forum, and then via IM.
The Linux community is more like a large, tight-knit family to me than a community. If I’m stuck on a problem, someone will help me. Equally, if someone else does not know something, and I know the answer, I will always try to point them in the right direction. Every little helps - and, in my opinion, you should give back just as much as you get from this “community” - or family, if you will.
And off I go to a lesson ![]()

Pah! Help via IM? You lightweight
When I first joined LQ, I couldn’t for the life of me get RH8 to burn correctly. So some kind soul (who I have never heard from since) posted me a set of cds that they had burned.
Moral of the story: LQ rocks. Very hard.

LQ.org was and still is a good site for those just starting out with Linux. I started out answering questions mostly but had a few questions myself, but I remembered when 30 new posts was a lot 5 years ago.
Though I don’t login that often anymore, hell, I think it’s been 3 or 4 months in fact, I’d recommend the site. But it’s kind of nice to let the site go, I found myself way too involved, it consumed me so I’ve taken my life back and doing more things I enjoy instead nowadays. Who knows though, not even sure I’ll ever login again. Today for the first time in months I browsed around anonymously without logging in to see what’s going on, if anything has changed, etc.

Good article. Excuse me for being incoherent and off-topic, but I just wiped out SUSE from my laptop and to my horror the Debian CD I burned was not able to do a proper installation. I suspect corrupt CDs.
I believe I asked before of what was a suitable distro for a laptop. I now find myself in desperate need of a distro… This is serious (not a parody :P)
I now appreciate why so many people ask “which distro?” I’d never look down on newbies. It’s like beginning all over again for me as my brain’s got soft from not doing Linux installations for a while

Moral off the story: CD intergity is easy to check. So do it.

I always do an MD5sum. The strange thing was the the Md5 matched with the one in the HTTP mirror. But the installation failed at a late stage because of one or two packages which couldn’t be installed.
Moral: Don’t assume things about a long-time Linux user.

Haha! What’s up with all the morals?
That is very kind of them - actually, someone did something similar for me a few months back. I can’t download anything from school, so he burned the SUSE 10.1 CDs and sent them to me
LQ rocks.
Drew - Really? Are you no longer a moderator there? I didn’t know that you’d left… But I haven’t been on for quite a while either. I have little ’spurts’ of activity, but those few and fairly far between. It’s a pity, but I’m busier with other forums these days. You don’t want to know - I’ve got 6000 posts under my belt in less than half a year
Hari - Hehe! That is unfortunate; there was probably an error while burning the disk? Anyway, if you’re going to try out a new distro, just pick a random one from Distrowatch’s list and try it out!
Or you might want to try out one of the two I reviewed in what was called the ‘One A Day’ project (which died) - they are quite good. Kate OS looks quite promising, and I never miss an opportunity to recommend Ubuntu 6.06.
Pick one at random - you will probably be as surprised as I was

I’m still a moderator there. I have pleaded a few times to Jeremy to take away such privileges, as I really don’t put in enough work or say any longer on the site, but he won’t budge..

He’s a good man is Jeremy. He’s probably waiting for an LWE in your area so he can sleep in your spare room

You were a great mod, though, Drew - so, if you ever change your mind, we’d all be glad to have you back… Yes, even the one who just visits LQ from time to time and knows that he should do so more often

Heh, I don’t think LWE will ever come to Texas.. but if it does, I’d let someone stay with me if they wanted.
But yeah, just got totally burned out on LQ, not sure if I’ll ever go back, at least if I do, it won’t be full time participation.

I’m probably going to the UK LWE this year - if I do, it should be a good laugh!
Drew, was it partly to do with Ethan? With all the new responsibilities (which aren’t so new any more - hehe! ;)), I’m not surprised you found it hard to keep up with LQ.
But, if you ever decide to go back..

A small portion was due to the new arrival. But it slowly built up over time. I let LQ consume a large percentage of my life, so I decided to take back my life and do things I enjoy doing, the things I should have been doing instead of repeatedly answering questions over and over when the newbie could have hit the search button..

Hehe… That is true. And I’m sure you’re a better person for that (lol)
I spend too much time on forums - it’s almost like an addiction. However, I will strive to cut down on the amount of time I spend on them… So much time sitting at the PC can’t be good for me
Hehe.

Drew has toned down a lot these days
I still remember our first clash over at LQ.org over reviving a long-dead thread. Was quite an affair
At that time I never imagined we’d be commenting on each other’s blogs.
Ahh… tempus fugit.

Yeah, deep down I hate all clashes at LQ.org. I look back now and those were just a waste of time. Too much PC time really does take your life away. If it wasn’t so damn hot down here in Austin, I would definitely be spending more time outside as well.

And I like to wait for the final result - the bigger the surprise, the better.
