Introducing IceWeasel and IceDove

Ok, I’m a couple of days late, but I love the new IceWeasel icon, so I had to post about it!

I’m not going to say what I think of the saga ;) If you don’t know about the Debian (and derivatives)/Mozilla fiasco, please read this.

There it is, in all its glory (see bottom-right).. It’s not the official IceWeasel icon yet, but I have a feeling it will be made it within the next few days/weeks.

IceWeasel IconAnd a quick summary of the article I linked to: there are trademark issues with Firefox and its icon. Firefox may not be distributed without its icon, but, because the icon is trademarked, Debian (and some derivatives, such as Ubuntu) use different icons.. Anyway, to cut a long story short, Firefox is being renamed IceWeasel, and Thunderbird will become IceDove in the world’s favourite Linux distribution (I’m talking about Ubuntu, not Debian, by the way ;)).

Bad split-up. Nice icon. Great job.

  1. I wish they’d settle their diffenrences and make up.

    That said, I love the icons, although it should be ‘IceFox’ or even ‘IceOtter’. That animal is not a weasel…

  2. I gave IceWeasel a try last night. Don’t see any point in switching as right now it’s just a rebranded Firefox.

    I’ll wait and see - I may never switch, after all, I have non-free repositories enabled for apt….
