Ubuntu 6.10 Install CD Bug

Having spent the past couple of hours on the #ubuntu IRC channel on FreeNode and browsing around the Ubuntu Forums, I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason for the black screen immediately after the loading bootsplash is, in fact, a bug, and as such I’m
not the only one experiencing it. It’s probably an Xorg bug, or a bad setting in xorg.conf. This is quite disappointing, but I’ll have to grin and bear it - I’ve also heard great things about Edgy, so I haven’t been put off just yet

The only workaround at the moment is to download the Alternate install CD and use that. That’s what I’m doing at the moment - my second 700MB download of the day is just finishing.

But look on the bright side: it’s not completely foxxed up, eh?

E@syVG: I haven’t tried them both out yet… I could write an (opinionated) comparison of the two if you wish, though

Gunny - Hehe! Actually, I don’t have a download limit.. I was just ranting because I had to wait for another 700MB ISO to finish download, and it was taking its time (I lie, it took less than half an hour)

And Gunny - what could possibly be better than the CLI?

Anyway, I’ve just installed FC6 on my laptop (the other one doesn’t work properly - it has a few problems, eg. NIC doesn’t work, battery does not charge, etc), and its GUI doesn’t work with my ATI Mobility Radeon X700XL… Neither did Ubuntu 6.10 until I installed the proprietary driver manually. I’ll try updating the FC6 ATi driver in the same way, and I’ll let you know if it works.

If it doesn’t, I’ve still got Links!

As you are using a Debian based distro, your final comment is against the social contract and, as such, a bunch of hippies are on the way round to see you. The correct phrasing should be

I checed out Kubuntu and the whole thing got weaselled up when I tried to upgrade to Eft. Why is it that Ubuntu are incapable of making a new version that works on day one?

Meh, I don’t know why I bother with these binary distros… Slackware’s still my favourite distro, and I’m dying to try out Slack 11, but as FC6 had gone so well on the other laptop I wanted to see if I had the same luck with this one… Obviously not

Actually, next weekend, I think I’ll install Slack 11, recompile to a 2.6.x kernel and install the ATi driver - it will save me far more hassle than all this Fedora/Ubuntu rubbish is causing

Ubuntu’s a great distro, but I do agree with you - they don’t seem to get final releases right. I think I’ll wait for the DVD version to come out… That might be stable enough to use on my laptop. If not, I’ll install my <3 : Slackware

Oh, and Ray, don’t be so lazy! There’s already a Firefox 2.0 package for Slack 11 and you’re still using 1.5.0.7

This sounds like the “Ubuntu Black Screen of Death.”

See this bug report and if you’re experiencing the same issue, please report in the bug so Ubuntu Devs can get a sense of the severity of this issue.

Yay on using Slackware! I now have the 2.0 Slack pack - installed it last night. The vanilla install from Mozilla wasn’t playing nice so it had to go.

And yep, I too hate messing around with binary distros, they always bring sooo many problems to the table.

Gunny - That sucks… At least you get something decent. At home (a small country - I won’t say which) we get charged £30 for 256Kb/s down and 128Kb/s up: it’s ridiculous, but they’ve also got a monolopy, so there is no other choice if you want something relatively (4x *sigh*) faster than 56K.

Ray - I agree! Somehow there’s always a problem with binary distros… Hehe!

Slackware has excellent dependency management: you compile the program and, during compilation, it tells you the packages you are missing. Then you go get them and install them. What could be easier?

That’s about as useful as ed’s syntax highlighting and generous error reporting!!

That said, I’d proabley try the Slack once I’ve cut my teeth on Buntu.
