Ubuntu 7.04: A Hit

April 20, 2007 on 5:52 pm | In Ubuntu |

All of the reviews I have read of Ubuntu’s latest and greatest release have implied the same thing: it’s a hit. I have been running the Beta since a few days after it was released and it has worked flawlessly with the exception of one or two bugs which were already on Launchpad, the Canonical-run service which Ubuntu’s developers use to track the product’s bugs and their status.

There was plenty of talk before the final release about some of Feisty Fawn’s new features, such as the innovative Migration Assistant to aid your transition from Windows to Ubuntu and the Proprietary Drivers Manager to allow you to more easily control which proprietary drivers are installed and in use on your system. There are also some more subtle changes which have been blogged about.

On the developer front, due to the recent (well, fairly recent) Open Sourcing of Java and Sun’s partnership with Canonical a complete Java stack has been made more readily available for those who require it, which is excellent.

Oh, and did you know that Michael Dell, CEO of Dell is running Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn on his newest laptop? This was announced not long after Dell’s decision to pre-install Linux on more of the computers in its range, so it’s good to know that Michael Dell practises what he preaches ;)

In fact, there was such anticipation for this release that celebration parties were organised and blogged about all over the world! I just wish I could have gone to one!

We should also expect to see the first release of Ubuntu Studio, a specialised version of Ubuntu geared towards audio, video and graphics enthusiasts and professionals, in the next few days.

There are plenty of screenshots boasting the graphical elements of Feisty Fawn and I hope to get my hands on the installation CD, or unrestricted internet so that I can upgrade my still-beta laptop soon!

  1. On the desktop is great, but how about Ubuntu on the server? If Dell starts running it on those kinds of Dell products, then I think we’ll really be seeing something.

  4. Unfortunately, Ubuntu Studio has been pushed back a bit… the team are hoping for a late April/early May release

  5. Jack - On the server side it will also depend on the support options available. Ubuntu could potentially make a breakthrough into the server market if it were offered as a pre-installation option on Dell’s servers, but there would have to be an option for the customer to purchase a subscription to a support service from either Dell or Canonical directly. What I think would be even better is if Dell offered tried and tested server distributions, both with commercial support (RedHat, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, etc) and without (CentOS, Slackware, etc) as pre-installation options. The ability to choose a distribution which is renowned for excellent support, such as RedHat, would allow Linux to penetrate deeper into the server market than a ‘new’ distribution in this market such as Ubuntu, in my opinion.

    St.Jimmy - Excellent! :D

ubustu - Thank you for the update. I look forward to the first release of Ubuntu Studio!

  7. No fair. Not only did i think I’d stick with Etch for a while, the copy of Beginning Ubuntu Linux 2nd Edition I received yesterday only goes to 6.10. Looks like I may be jumping distros again!

Ah well, could be worse - it could be an rpm based distro :)

  8. St.Jimmy - That’s cool. And if Ubuntu Studio is coming out today, it’s not out quite yet :)

Ray - Haha! Not again! :D Ubuntu 7.04 is very good… and, as you said - at least it’s not an RPM distro

  9. Glad y’all are enjoying 7.04, but it really hosed some key pieces of my desktop machine when I “upgraded” from 6.10. Now I cannot get VMware Player to install (posted the issue on VMware forum, but no response after more than a week), and now Xsane will not work with my scanner (as it had done quite nicely with 6.10. Now I am using the alternate bootup back to Win2K to use those, and everything else, since I cannot stay with the 7.04 instance long enough to figure out the issues, or what else it hosed…

    Ah, “progress” …
